The Nile and everyday life

The Nile gave communities water, food and a way to travel. Farmers watched the river and grew crops on the fertile land beside it. Families also worked as potters, builders, scribes, artists, traders and sailors.

Learning about daily life makes ancient Egypt more than a story about kings. Children can ask what a home, a boat, a meal or a school might have looked like and then draw their own answer.

Why did Egyptians build pyramids?

Pyramids were monumental tombs built for some kings. Their shape and decoration expressed ideas about the afterlife, protection and the journey of the ruler. Different pyramids were built in different periods and places, so they are not all the same.

A good activity is to compare a pyramid with a modern building plan: choose a base, think about materials and draw a safe route through the inside.

Pharaohs, symbols and writing

A pharaoh was a ruler, but ancient Egyptian society also depended on farmers, craftspeople, soldiers, priests, merchants and scribes. Hieroglyphs combined signs that could represent sounds, ideas or objects, and they were used in many different settings.

Symbols such as the ankh, lotus and scarab appear in art and stories. They are useful starting points for questions: What could a symbol communicate? Which colours would you choose?
