The Magic Nile River, The Artery of Life

The Clever Crane: The Invention of the Shaduf

How did the ancient farmer lift water from the low river to water his high land without getting too tired? They invented a simple and genius tool called the Shaduf! A Shaduf is a long wooden pole balanced on another pole, with a rope holding a bucket on one end and a heavy stone on the other. When the farmer pulls the bucket down to fill it with water, the heavy stone on the other side helps lift the full bucket back up super easily. It's just like playing on a seesaw, but used for farming!

If you built a Shaduf seesaw in your backyard, which friend would sit on the other end to lift you high in the air?
