Boxes Inside Boxes: The Pharaonic Sarcophagus

When a king went to sleep for the very last time, they didn't put him in just one box, but inside multiple nesting boxes that look just like Russian Matryoshka dolls! The biggest box was made of huge, strong stone. Inside that was a beautifully decorated wooden box, and inside that was yet another box made of pure gold! This box was called the Sarcophagus, and artists painted the king's face and eyes perfectly on the outside. Do you know why? Because they believed that when the king's spirit flew around the other world and returned, it needed to recognize its owner's face so it could pop back inside safely!
