The Royal Name Plate: The Cartouche

Do you like writing your name in a pretty frame to make it stand out? The Pharaohs did that too! Kings and queens wrote their names using hieroglyphic letters inside a long, oval shape closed by a line at the bottom, called a Cartouche. This Cartouche was like a magic rope wrapping around the king's name to protect it from evil spirits and keep it safe forever. Whenever people saw a Cartouche carved on walls or statues, they instantly knew the name belonged to someone very important and to a great ruler of Egypt!
