The King with Scales: Sobek

Deep in the wide waters of the Nile lived massive, mighty crocodiles that made people feel both afraid and amazed at the same time. With their strong jaws, sharp teeth, and tough green scales acting like armor, these creatures were the undisputed masters of the river. The ancient Egyptians deeply respected the crocodiles' power and worshiped a mighty crocodile-headed god named Sobek. They believed Sobek controlled the waters of the Nile, making it flood to water all their farm fields. In some huge temples, priests would pick a real crocodile to live like a spoiled king in a special water pool. They fed it the most delicious fresh meat and even decorated its head with real gold jewelry that sparkled under the sun!
