Little Secrets from Daily Life

A Pillow of Stone and Wood: The Headrest

When you go to sleep, you rest your head on a soft, fluffy cotton or feather pillow, right? The Pharaohs slept in a totally different way! They didn't have soft pillows; instead, they used a "headrest" made of wood or ivory, and sometimes even stone! It was a base with a half-circle piece on top to hold up the neck. Even though it sounds painful and not very comfy, it was super important for keeping their beautiful hairstyles and wigs perfectly in place while they slept. It also let a cool breeze blow under their necks during hot summer nights.
